Winning the Lottery

moneyThe other day my wife and I were driving home after a visit with her family.  It was a long drive and I had a lot of time to think.  As we drove across the mountains, a billboard caught my eye.  You know one of those lottery billboards that show the amount that could be won if you have the lucky numbers.  Well, the amount to be won was over 100 million dollars.  Wow, I can not comprehend having that much money at my disposal.

Like any ordinary, struggling to pay the bills kind of person would, I started thinking about what I would do if I won the money.  The first thing is painful reality that about 40% of it would go to Uncle Sam.  But still, over $60 million left to do as you please.  I thought about paying the bills and taking a trip to Disney World with my family.  I though of buying a house and a specific car.  I though of investing the funds for the future of my children.  I am sure my thoughts were very similar to a lot of people of have thought about the possibility.

However, my thoughts changed to a more meaningful purpose.  I started thinking about missionary efforts overseas.  I thought about churches in America that needed financial help and ministries helping people that would need support.  But, what would I do personally?  I thought about what I am doing right now in church planting.  One of the hardest things in church planting is raising enough money.  It takes a lot of money to church plant.  Money to live and work for the church, money to recruit a great team, money to provide needed items, like computers, office space and even paper clips.  It takes money to church plant.

As I dreamed about planting a church with access to that amount of money, I was interrupted with another thought; I have access to the one who owns it all!!!!  My dreaming of what I would do if I won the lottery was entertaining.  But the reality is, I should be dreaming about what God desires for me because HE OWNS IT ALL.  He will provide!  I don’t need the lottery I NEED HIM.

So, what would you do if you won the lottery?

wrong1We are all spiritual people designed to search for God.  We are all on this journey to find God and truth.  Many have turned their back on the christian faith because often the Christian comes across as knowing all truth and anyone that opposes are second class.  The arrogance of “I am right and you are wrong” turn so many away from the christian faith.

I recently read a story about a debate that took place between a well known atheist and a well known christian philosopher.  Many students were interviewed after the debate to get their thoughts on who won.  Without a doubt, to those interviewed, the christian philosopher had won the intellectual debate.  However, most were turned off by the demeaning attitude the christian philosopher had towards his opponent.  This attitude convinced those interviewed even more that they did not want to become a Christian.

Paul said it best when he summarized the statement that “without love, you are a clanging cymbol”.  So many have been turned off by the arrogance of “being right”, and I don’t blame them.  Keep this in mind, most people are not asking, “Is it true?” but are asking, “Do I want to be like you?”  Truth and knowledge are very important, but not to those who can’t hear it.
